El Salvador’s president has canceled his appearance at the Miami Bitcoin Conference after the country was classified in a state of emergency following a string of gang killings.
Nayib Bukele wrote in a letter posted on the conference’s Twitter page :
I have just decided to cancel my participation in the conference due to unforeseen circumstances in my home country that require my complete attention as president. was supposed to be Bukele’s speech. He had to “make the difficult decision” not to participate in the event due to the rise of gang wars in the country.

Since March 29, when authorities reported 62 killings, El Salvador has been in a state of emergency. Bukele also stated that 7,000 gang members have been apprehended and that he may reduce prisoner meals.
The world’s largest Bitcoin conference, which will last four days, began yesterday at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Many prominent industry figures, including Anthony Pompliano, MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor, and billionaire Peter Thiel, are expected to attend.
Last year, Bukele made news when he said El Salvador will adopt Bitcoin as legal cash, and he was scheduled to be one of the primary speakers at the conference.
Jack Mallers, the CEO of the mobile Bitcoin payment app Strike, will also be present. He was a pivotal figure in the acceptance of Bitcoin in El Salvador. In an interview, he stated that he is “ready to die for” Bitcoin and the message it conveys.
With its favorable atmosphere for business, Miami boasts one of the most crypto-friendly mayors. Mayor Francis Suarez of Miami has already lured a few cryptocurrency miners to the state.
