Steam has banned games that use blockchain technology or support NFTs and cryptocurrency trading in its rules and guidelines.
Valve has updated Steam’s onboarding page for partners and Steamworks users with a line stating that it will soon ban NFT trading games from the platform.

Under the heading “what you shouldn’t publish on Steam,” a new rule specifically prohibits the distribution of blockchain applications that issue or enable the exchange of crypto or NFTs.
Steam is removing NFT games
Today, several game creators report that their games using NFTs are being removed from the platform. The official Age Of Rust Twitter account – where players collect NFTs – announced “Steam will be kicking all blockchain games off the platform, including Age Of Rust.”.

The Age Of Rust Twitter account adds that from its understanding, “Steam’s point of view is that items have value and they don’t allow items that can have real-world value on their platform”.
There are currently numerous Steam games that tie NFT and cryptocurrency into their gameplay. The first is Mir4, which allows players to earn cryptocurrency in-game despite negative reviews highlighting the allegedly boring gameplay.
Valve has not yet issued a statement regarding its stance on NFT games other than an update to the Steamworks rules and guidelines. A comment from the company has been requested, and we will update this story if one is received.
Game director Naoki Yoshida has revealed that discussions with Xbox have so far been positive, saying “I don’t want to say we won’t have an Xbox version, but I hope to provide an update to players very soon”.
