Most often, in the outgoing year, users searched for news related to Afghanistan. At the same time, in second place in the top 10 news queries, ahead of even the news about vaccines against coronavirus, the shares of the cinema operator AMC Entertainment are located, which soared by 1250% over the year thanks to the coordinated efforts of private investors.
In fifth place on this list – the shares of the owner of the chain of stores of video games and consumer electronics GameStop, which grew by more than 800%. The fourth place in the ten most popular news was taken by the cryptocurrency Dogecoin, the tenth – another digital currency, ether (Ethereum).
The latest economic topic on the list of the main global trends in 2021 is incentive payments during the coronavirus pandemic. She was accompanied by news about the election of a senator from the state of Georgia, Hurricane Ida and the coronavirus.
Among the general searches, the top eight in the top 10 are for various sporting events, with the most common searches for news about cricket, the most popular sport in India with a population of 1.38 billion.
In Russia, the most important event of the outgoing year was the European Football Championship, judging by Google searches. In second place is the Tokyo Olympics, in third place is the Eurovision Song Contest.
The most mysterious phenomenon for Russians was the antistress toy “simple dimple” – this is the word that was most often entered into the search after the words “what is this.” And the third place in the list was taken by the word “pop-it”, another name for this toy.
The most popular personages of Runet are opposition politician Alexei Navalny, singer MakSim, who suffered a serious illness, and political scientist Ekaterina Shulman.
